Ever since I can remember I have always loved anything Art Deco, so much so that I am convinced in my previous life I was born in the 1930s! So when my parents said they were having a few days away in Morecambe, I instantly thought of the perfect place for afternoon tea.
The Midland Hotel is a grade 2 listed Art Deco building, built in 1933 and designed by architect Edward Paley. It cost £4795 including the furnishings and had 40 bedrooms. People such as Coco Chanel and Laurence Olivier have even stayed there.
I became aware of the hotel when it was featured on North West News. A development company bought the derelict building in 2003 and in 2008 it reopened, still as the Midland, but restored to it’s former glory. I was so pleased that the developers hadn’t demolished it in favour of building another high rise hotel, but instead have kept the original features.
The hotel has a Sun lounge, where they serve fabulous afternoon tea.
2 hours later we had finally finished ploughing our way through the sandwiches, cakes and scones, all washed down with plentiful cups of tea and coffee! Needless to say my parents, husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
We then took a stroll along the promenade
and came across the Eric Morecambe statue – we had to take the obligatory photo!
We walked to the end of the pier and saw a disused building with a plaque stating it was the old railway station. The trains would terminate here and the passengers would then board the steamers to Ireland and Scotland. It still stands strong despite being built in 1853!
We had such a fantastic day – lovely food and a glorious walk, topped off with a gorgeous sunset.

Have you ever seen the penguin exhibit at the London Zoo? It another great example of art deco and has been listed.
Unfortunately it’s not very good for penguins, so they’ve moved them to a new habitat. They tried to replace the penguins with porcupines but people complained it ruined the sweeping art deco lines. Last time I visited it was sitting empty, with just a few sketched of penguin drawings to remind you of what it looked like.
Ah that’s a shame, I hadn’t heard of it (don’t think I’ve ever been to London zoo!)
Yay! Scones are something else aren’t they?! Mr P booked us into a suite for my birthday a few years ago. Fabulous room & glorious views across the bay to Cumbria. So glad you liked it, one of our favourite places too! Kx
