Handmade Monday 117

Standard

Today is our 2nd wedding anniversary, where does the time go? In keeping with tradition we have given each other presents to do with cotton, the present for the 2nd year of marriage. To go with my present I made my hubby a card using cotton fabric and thread, with a cotton reel outlined using free motion embroidery.

It’s a very short post this week but pop over to handmade harbour to see what everyone else has been up to!

Handmade Monday 116

Standard

With the Manchester Creative craft show done and dusted I had this weekend free for some sewing. What’s more it was sewing that I had planned for me, a very rare occasion at the moment! With the sun appearing last weekend we got the deck chairs out, however it reminded me I wanted to make some cushions to hang off them to make them just a bit more comfy. I decided on an envelope cushion with a free motion embroidered beach hut design with ties which I could use to attach to the deck chair.

Sewing Bee Book: Part 1

Standard

On Sunday I spent the day with my mum at the Mostyn store of Abakhan. I went with a specific list of what I needed, as previous visits have resulted in impulse buying and mounds of fabric not being used. My main inspiration for the trip was the Great British Sewing Bee book. I bought the book after seeing the first episode and after a quick flick through, I couldn’t wait to start trying the projects!

Baking by Eye

Standard

A while ago my scales gave up mid baking and I had to resort to using the Tala cooks dry measure that I had bought to measure out American cups.

I never did get round to buying new batteries for the scales and so for several months now I have continued to use the dry measure for measuring out all of my ingredients. This goes against all my instincts as I am a very precise baker and I think there’s so much more room for error using the measure instead of scales. The only thing I can’t use it for is butter, I therefore go by eye and use the line marks that are on the packet to roughly guess.

So far all my cakes have turned out with no problem, prahaps one day I will get round to buying batteries, but for the moment I quite like the simplicity of the measure. Does anynone else use one instead of scales? I would love to hear from any of you who just go by eye and not use scales at all!

Handmade Monday 110

Standard

This week has been a bit of a mixed one, with lots of sewing and baking of all sorts of different things. My first job was to make a custom order cover for an iPad Mini. With free reign of choice of material, and knowing a little about the recipient, I chose a retro feeling typewriter print Read the rest of this entry

#postcircle

Standard

From the joys of Twitter I discovered that Anna was setting up a post circle, where those who have joined get to send and receive post. What could be better?! So I signed up and I have been allocated to the bumble bee group (that made me excited in itself as I love bees!). We were put into groups of 6 and Anna chose who we were to write to first, after that who we write to and the frequency is up to us. Read the rest of this entry
